Our garlands are made with the papery, everlasting blooms of the Strawflower plant (bracteantha bracteata), which is native to Australia. These flowers are described as everlasting because they can retain their shape and color for a very long time after they have been harvested and dried. The plant itself is very hardy, and can survive our relatively mild Southern California frosts - our Strawflower plants usually last for two seasons before they start to lose their vigor. Each time we cut off the fully blooming flowers, it triggers the plants to push out more blooms and continue to create beautiful flowers. The plants are grown with 100% organic practices. We make our garlands in batches each week, harvesting thousands of individual flowers at once, and then immediately threading them onto the string before the flowers have a chance to dry. Once strung, the garlands are hung up to dry for about a week. Even after the Strawflowers are picked and strung up, they can still react to the weather for a good while. You may notice them closing up when the weather is cold and damp, and then opening up when the weather gets warm.
